Keflavik Iceland (KEF) Airport Information

Keflavik International Airport is Iceland's largest and busiest airport, situated approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Reykjavik, the capital city. It serves as the primary gateway for international travelers visiting Iceland. Originally built by the United States military during World War II, the airport has evolved into a modern facility with extensive international connections.

The airport features a single terminal building with various amenities for passengers, including shops, restaurants, lounges, and duty-free stores. It serves as a hub for Icelandair, the country's flag carrier, as well as for other international airlines offering flights to and from Europe, North America, and other destinations worldwide.

Due to Iceland's strategic location between Europe and North America, Keflavik International Airport plays a crucial role in facilitating transatlantic air travel, making it a popular layover point for travelers en route between these continents.

In recent years, the airport has experienced significant growth in passenger traffic, driven by Iceland's booming tourism industry and its emergence as a popular travel destination for adventurers, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking unique experiences such as the Northern Lights.

Iceland 4wd SUV discounted offers by Europcar

Do i need to rent an SUV to travel in iceland?

Whether you need to rent an 4x4 SUV from Europcar at Keflavik airport to travel in Iceland depends on several factors including your travel itinerary, the time of year, and the specific destinations you plan to visit.

  • Road Conditions: Iceland has a mix of paved roads and gravel/dirt roads, especially in rural areas and the interior Highlands. While many of the main tourist attractions can be reached via paved roads, some areas may require driving on gravel or rough terrain. In these cases, having a vehicle with higher clearance like an SUV can be beneficial.

  • Weather Conditions: Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, with snow, ice, and strong winds occurring even in summer. In winter, road conditions can be particularly challenging, especially in more remote areas. An SUV with four-wheel drive can provide better traction and stability in adverse weather conditions. Fortunately, all of our cars are fitted with studded winter tires at no extra cost from November 1st to April 15th.

  • Travel Itinerary: If you plan to stick to the main tourist routes and visit popular attractions along the Ring Road (Route 1), a regular car may suffice. However, if you plan to explore more remote areas or venture into the Highlands, an SUV with four-wheel drive may be necessary, as many of these roads are only accessible to high-clearance vehicles.

  • Comfort and Safety: An SUV typically offers more space and comfort, especially if you're traveling with luggage or equipment. Additionally, the higher seating position can provide better visibility, which may be useful for enjoying Iceland's scenic landscapes.

Ultimately, while it's possible to travel in Iceland with a regular car, an SUV can provide added versatility and safety, especially if you plan to explore off-the-beaten-path areas or visit during the winter months. However, it's essential to consider your specific travel plans and comfort level when making your vehicle choice.

Good to know things when renting a car in Iceland Keflavík airport

What do I need to know about driving in Iceland?

Driving in Iceland is the most rewarding and relaxing way to see the country. But with changeable weather, free-roaming livestock, and often unpaved roads, it may be a little different to driving in your home country. In our Icelandic driving guide you´ll discover what you need to know before you set off.

What documents do I need to present at the counter when I pick up my car?

You will need to present to our customer representative:

  • Your normal driving license, issued by your country of residence (N.B. For license holders from the UK, where the driving license is issued in 2 parts, both parts of the license need to be presented) and held for at least one year. It will be requested at every rental. Note that your International Driving License is valid only if accompanied by your normal Driving License. Driving Licenses must be valid.

  • Your passport will also be required according to Icelandic law for car rentals.

  • Your valid credit card with an expiry date after the due check-in date or a valid Europcar charge card. If you use a Europcar prepaid voucher as means of payment (with a specified value or the mention 'Group & Days apply'), you must also present a credit card for those charges which have not been prepaid (such as extras, refueling charge, excess due in the event of damage to or loss of the rented vehicle).

What methods of payment are accepted by Europcar in Iceland?

  • Credit Cards: We accept major credit cards: Mastercard, Visa, Diners Club, American Express. Credit cards are accepted to the limits authorized by the credit card company. Debit cards are NOT accepted at the time of reservation or rental.

  • Europcar charge cards and Full Credit vouchers are accepted throughout the network; on their own, they permit the rental of most vehicle categories.

  • Europcar prepaid vouchers (with a specified value or the mention Group Days Apply) are accepted as means of payment of the rental charges, but they must be accompanied by a credit card for the charges which have not been prepaid (extras, refueling charge, excess due in case of damage to or loss of the rented vehicle).

Do I need to check the condition of the vehicle prior leaving the location?

Yes, you have to check that the vehicle condition report reflects the actual vehicle condition. If an apparent defect is not listed, please proceed to a joint examination of the vehicle with our employee, in order to update the rental agreement.

May I use my credit card coverage?

Some credit cards may entitle their holders to a degree of cover for damage to, or loss of, the rental vehicle. We are happy to recognize such cards and for the card-holder, in such a case, not to avail himself of the protections set out above and to stand liable for any damage to, or loss of, our vehicle.

Please however be aware of the following:
If you choose to be covered by your card and decline our protections, you are also declining the recovery service from liable third parties.
The extent of coverage provided by credit cards varies and is usually subject to certain restrictions, in particular concerning the maximum length of rental and the type of vehicle which can be covered. We strongly advise you to contact your Credit Card organization before rental and provide details/proof of your coverage when arriving at the at the rental location.

Can I return the vehicle outside the location opening hours?

Yes, you may return your vehicle when the location is closed, but please check return facilities when picking up the car. That is to say, please ask if a key return box is available at the check-in station.

CAUTION: The vehicle will remain your responsibility until it has been checked by our representative.

Do I need to return the car with a full tank?

Vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and you should return the vehicle with a full tank. Otherwise, you will be charged for missing fuel at the end of the rental. Our rates do not include fuel. Refueling charge applies.

Always make sure that you use the right type of fuel. Charges apply when incorrect fuel has been added to the rented vehicles fuel tank. This includes workshop hours and any damages to the vehicle’s mechanism. Towing cost and vehicle replacement related to breakdown or damage is the driver´s responsibility.
