4x4 Car Rental in Iceland

Iceland's road network varies considerably, from well-maintained paved highways to gravel roads and seasonal mountain routes. While many travellers can comfortably explore Iceland in a standard passenger car, a 4x4 may be the better choice depending on your itinerary and the time of year.

A 4x4 can offer:

• Additional traction in winter conditions
• Increased ground clearance on rougher roads
• Greater comfort on longer journeys
• Extra luggage space for families and groups
• Access to approved F-roads and Highland routes
• Added confidence when travelling outside the main tourist areas

The right vehicle depends on where you're planning to go, when you're travelling and how many people are joining your trip.

For more than six decades, Höldur Car Rental has helped travellers explore Iceland safely and confidently.

When you rent from Höldur, you'll benefit from:

• Iceland's official Europcar franchisee

Whether you're heading for the Highlands, the Westfjords or a complete Ring Road adventure, we're here to help you find the right vehicle.

Iceland's Highlands are one of the country's most spectacular and remote regions. Access is primarily via seasonal mountain roads known as F-roads.

If you're planning to drive on F-roads, you'll need an approved 4x4 vehicle. However, having four-wheel drive does not automatically mean every vehicle is suitable for every Highland route.

Road conditions, river crossings, vehicle restrictions and seasonal closures can all affect where you can drive.

Before setting out:

• Check current road conditions
• Review vehicle restrictions carefully
• Plan your route in advance
• Confirm that your chosen vehicle is approved for the roads you intend to use
