Höldur - Europcar Iceland Car Rental Coverage Options

Our Basic Protection package, included as standard with all our rentals, provides a Collision Damage Waiver, Third Party Loss coverage, Personal Accident Insurance, and Theft Protection. The excess for this package is 265,000 ISK for standard cars and 475,000 ISK for larger vehicles, including 4x4 SUVs and prestige cars.

For enhanced coverage, you can upgrade to our Medium Protection package. This includes a Super Collision Damage Waiver and adds Gravel Protection (front windshield and headlights) with zero excess. It also significantly reduces your liability to 65,000 ISK for standard cars and 120,000 ISK for larger vehicles.

Our most comprehensive option, the Premium Protection package, covers everything in the Medium package plus protection against gravel, sand, and ash damage plus tire and wheel protection. With this premium option, you also benefit from a zero-excess policy on all applicable damages.

Roadside Assistance (RSA) is an optional, standalone coverage crafted to minimize your expenses when you need a tow truck or other assistance. With a deductible of ISK 35,000 for passenger cars and ISK 55,000 for SUVs and larger vehicles, you can drive with confidence, knowing dependable help is just a call away.

Understanding Your Car Rental Coverage Options

The own-risk fee is applied to individual incidents, offering coverage for each separate case of damage. If multiple damages occur at different times, the CDW and SCDW own-risk fees will be charged for each incident. This ensures thorough protection during your rental.

Know What Your Rental Insurance Covers — and What It Doesn't

Understanding your coverage before you hit the road means no surprises when you return your vehicle. This page outlines the damages and charges that fall outside the scope of your rental insurance or protection plan, so you can plan your trip with complete confidence.

Charges that are not covered by any insurance or protection

• Charges applied when incorrect fuel has been added to the rented vehicles fuel tank, workshop hours and any damages to the vehicle’s mechanism.
  
  
• Fees and service charges resulting from the renter’s use of the car, such as parking charges and road-tolls as well as parking fines and fines resulting from violating traffic laws.
  
  
• Fines and service charges resulting from driving rental cars on roads or tracks with no road number and/or driving Passenger cars and 2wd vehicles on roads that are marked with an F on public maps, as well as driving Kjölur (road 35) or Kaldidalur (road 550).
  
  
• Fees and replacement cost for lost car keys, licence plates and extra equipment.
  
  
• Cleaning fee for Campers and Motorhomes.
  
  
• Fine/cleaning fee if someone smokes inside the car because all our cars are non-smoking.

Damages that are not covered by any insurance or protection

• Damage caused by driving on rough roads to the vehicle's transmission, drive, battery, and other parts that are in or attached to the chassis; damage to the chassis resulting from scraping the bottom on rough roads.
  
  
• Damages caused by driving in or across rivers or any kind of waterways. Such driving is totally the responsibility of the renter.
  
  
• Damages to the rented vehicle caused by driving rental cars on roads or tracks with no road number and/or off-road driving, for example, on paths and tracks, on beaches, in areas only accessible during low tide, or in other trackless areas.
  
  
• Damage done by pets.
  
  
• Damage affecting only suspension and batteries, and damage resulting from this.
  
  
• Damages to the interior of the vehicle, such as holes burned into seats, carpets, or mats.
  
  
• Damage resulting from the driver being under the influence of alcohol, stimulants, or sedatives, or in any other way incapable of driving the vehicle in a safe manner.
  
  
• Damages to passenger cars and/or 2wd vehicles caused by driving on roads marked with an F on public maps as well as driving such cars on Kjölur (Road 35) or Kaldidalur (road 550).
  
  
• Theft or damage because of the authorized driver’s/renter's lack of reasonable care in protecting the rental vehicle (for example, leaving the vehicle running and unattended).
  
  

Good to know about Road Assistance (RSA)

Roadside Assistance (RSA) reduces the costs associated with calling a tow truck and covers a variety of general roadside services. The following services are included in Roadside Assistance (RSA):

• Lost keys or lockout: On-site assistance if keys are lost or locked inside the vehicle.
  
  
• Dead battery: Jump-start assistance to get the vehicle running if the battery dies.
  
  
• Flat or damaged tires: Assistance with installing a spare tire on-site or transporting the vehicle to the nearest tire repair shop.
  
  
• Rescue and towing on F-roads and gravel: Specialized rescue and towing services if the vehicle becomes undrivable on highland roads F-roads) or gravel roads (provided the vehicle was permitted to be driven on the road in question).
  
  
• General towing services: Transporting the vehicle to the nearest service center or rental location if it becomes undrivable for other reasons (e.g., due to a breakdown or an accident caused by the renter).

Transparency clause regarding Roadside Assistance costs: Roadside Assistance (RSA) fully covers the call-out fee and labor associated with the incidents listed above, as well as the cost of the tow truck. However, the service does not cover any material costs that may arise, such as the purchase of new tires, fuel drainage or damage resulting from using the wrong fuel, or the replacement/cutting of new car keys.

If you require Roadside Assistance, you may need to pay the third-party service provider directly at the scene. Should this happen, please keep your receipt. When you return your rental vehicle, simply present the receipt to our team, and Höldur will refund any eligible amount straight to your card.
