Choosing the right passenger vehicle for you

No matter the kind of trip you have in mind, you’ll need a vehicle to match. Whether you’re travelling for a romantic city break in Reykjavík or planning a family road trip of the “Ring Road”, at Höldur we have a car for you.

To choose the right car, there are some important factors to consider:

• Size. While compact cars such as Kia Picantos are perfect for couples or city travelling, an estate might be more comfortable for families and long distances.
  
  
• Transmission. If you’re used to a manual gearbox, we have plenty of options available. Alternatively, you may prefer an automatic transmission. At Höldur, we offer those too.
  
  
• Emissions. Eco-friendly drivers may prefer to drive a vehicle with lower emissions. Diesel vehicles tend to be less environmentally friendly than petrol.
  
  
• Value. Smaller cars are often cheaper to run. The same goes for electric vehicles, which don’t require conventional fuel.
  
  
• Suitability for particular roads. In Iceland, F-roads are highland roads that are rough and unpaved. These roads are only suitable for four-wheel drive vehicles. If you’re planning to visit destinations such as Landmannalaugar, you won’t be able to get there in a standard passenger vehicle.

All vehicles are subject to availability. If the specific model you selected when you booked is not available, you’ll be given a similar vehicle in the same vehicle class.

What to bring when hiring a vehicle in Iceland

No matter what kind of vehicle you want to hire, there are some important things to bring with you when you rent your car:

• A proof of age. You need to be at least 20 years old to hire a standard passenger vehicle with Höldur.

• A valid driving licence. You should have had your licence for at least a year before you can rent a vehicle.

• A credit card. This must be valid for the duration of your rental.

And that’s it! Bring these with you and you’re good to go.
